Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome. Tribe Pulse Survey gives you an honest, anonymous read on how strong your team's sense of "us" really is, and how effective you are at building it. The questions below cover the practical bits – getting set up, sharing the survey, reading your results – as well as the thinking behind the tool. If you can't find what you need here, you can reach us at jeremy@cfte.co.uk.
Getting started
Is Tribe Pulse Survey really free?
Yes, completely. There's no credit card, no trial that quietly expires, and no premium tier you get pushed towards once you're hooked. You can run as many surveys, across as many squads, as you like. We built it on a simple belief: every coach deserves a clear read on how their team is doing, and the cost of weak team identity is far higher than the cost of measuring it. The tool itself stays free. The deeper work – turning what you see into lasting change – is where our coaching and facilitation come in, but the measurement costs you nothing.
Do I need to download an app?
No. Tribe Pulse Survey runs in any web browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Nothing to install, nothing to keep updated.
How do I get started?
Register at the coach portal, which takes about a minute. Give your squad a name and sport, create your first survey, and you'll get a shareable link straight away. From there it's simply a matter of sending that link to your players.
Can I use this for more than one team?
Yes. You can set up and manage as many squads as you need from a single account, each with its own surveys and its own results. That's handy whether you manage several teams yourself or you're a performance professional supporting a number of coaches who each run their own.
For your players
Do my players need to create an account?
No. They open the link, answer the questions, and they're done. No sign-up, no password, no app to download.
How do I share the survey with my players?
When you create a survey, the app generates a unique link. Paste it wherever your squad already talks – WhatsApp, Slack, Teams or email. The easier you make it to reach, the higher your response rate will be.
How long does the survey take to complete?
Under two minutes. Fifteen short statements, each rated on a straightforward scale of one to seven.
Is the survey really anonymous?
Yes, genuinely. We collect no names, no email addresses, nothing that could identify a respondent. Each response is stored as fifteen numbers and a timestamp, and nothing else. This matters more than it might first appear: the honest answers, the ones that tell you something you didn't already know, tend only to surface when players feel safe enough to give them.
The TRIBE framework
What is TRIBE?
A research-backed model of what gives a team a strong identity, developed by the Centre for Team Excellence. The central idea is that teams perform at their best when members feel connected not only to one another but to a shared sense of who they are together.
What does each letter in TRIBE stand for?
Traditions, the shared history, rituals and practices that make a team distinctive. Relevance, the reasons being part of the team matters beyond just winning. Identity, how clear and distinctive the team's sense of itself is. Belonging, how much players feel they fit in and can be themselves. And Effectiveness, the team's confidence in its own collective ability to succeed.
Where does the 53% performance uplift figure come from?
From CfTE's published research, which found that teams with a strong identity performed, on average, 53% better than those without one. It's the reason we measure identity in the first place. Far from being a soft, nice-to-have quality, identity turns out to be one of the clearest predictors of how a team actually performs.
Understanding your results
How many players need to complete the survey before I can see results?
At least three. Until then, the results page simply tells you how many more responses you need. This threshold is deliberate. With fewer than three replies it becomes too easy to work out who said what, and that would undermine the anonymity the whole thing depends on.
What do the results mean?
You'll see four views: the overall strength of your team's identity, how effective you are at building it, a breakdown across the five TRIBE foundations, and a read on team performance. Together they answer two questions that matter for any coach. How strong is our sense of "us", and what's the one area I should work on next?
What is the Team Identity Battery?
A single gauge, from zero to one hundred per cent, showing the overall strength of identification with the team. Green means strong, amber moderate, red low. Think of it as the charge in your team's collective battery. A flat battery shows up as players going through the motions; a full one shows up as commitment, mutual support and the resilience to push through when things get hard.
What is the TRIBE Foundations chart showing me?
A bar for each of the five foundations – Traditions, Relevance, Identity, Belonging and Effectiveness – each scored out of seven. This is usually the most useful chart you'll look at, because it shows you where to focus rather than just how you're doing overall. A low Belonging bar points to a very different conversation than a low Traditions bar. Knowing which foundation is weakest is the start. Knowing what to do about it is what the TRIBE framework, and our work alongside coaches, is built for.
What does the Coach Identity Leadership score mean?
A row of five lightning bolts showing how effective you are, in your players' eyes, at building a shared sense of who they are. It reflects four things the strongest identity coaches do well: designing a clear sense of "us", advancing the team's interests, representing what the team stands for, and embedding that identity into everyday habits. At CfTE we call this DARE leadership. It's a score worth sitting with, because most of us rate ourselves rather more generously than our players do.
Can I compare results over time?
Yes. Once a team has two or more surveys with responses, a Compare button appears and shows the trend across all four dimensions side by side. This is where the tool really earns its keep. A single snapshot is interesting, but the shape of the change over weeks and months is what tells you whether your efforts are actually landing.
Using the tool well
How often should I run a pulse survey?
Often enough to see a trend, but not so often that players tire of it. Many coaches settle on every four to eight weeks, particularly around a change or a concerted push. The built-in reminder lets you schedule the next pulse at two, four, eight or twelve weeks, or on a date of your choosing. Remember that the value lives in the pattern over time, not in any single reading.
What should I do with the results?
Start with the TRIBE Foundations chart and pick out the lowest bar. Resist the temptation to fix everything at once. If Belonging is low, the work is about whether players genuinely feel they can be themselves here. If Traditions is low, it's about whether the team has a shared story worth belonging to in the first place. The measurement tells you where the gap is. The harder and more rewarding question is how to close it, and that's the territory our coaching, facilitation and TRIBE training are designed for, where most of the lasting change tends to happen.
Can I use this for school sport? Amateur teams? A military unit?
Yes to all of them. There's no level or sector restriction. The need for a shared identity is the same whether you coach a professional squad, a school team, a university side or a military unit. The questions are written to work across every one of them.
If you lead a workplace or business team rather than a sports team, there's a version built specifically for you at tribe-team-pulse.netlify.app. It offers the same functions, designed around the world of business leaders, managers and coaches.
The TRIBE framework and this survey tool were developed alongside the research behind For The Love Of The Game by Jeremy Holt – a book for sports coaches, managers, performance specialists and PE teachers who want to build teams their players will never want to leave.
What's the difference between the TRIBE Foundations score and the Team Identity Battery?
The Battery is the headline result, showing how strongly players identify with the team overall. The Foundations chart breaks that down into the five ingredients that build it. The Battery tells you how full the tank is; the Foundations tell you which inputs are running low. In practice you'll usually act on the Foundations and watch the Battery respond.
Emails and consent
What emails will I receive?
Up to three kinds. A note when responses come in, a reminder when a follow-up pulse is due, and free weekly tips from CfTE on leadership and team building. You stay in control of all of them.
How do I turn off email notifications?
Response notifications and reminders can each be switched off in your Profile, under Notifications and Communications. Turning these off has no effect on anything else in your account.
What happens if I unsubscribe from CfTE emails?
This one is worth understanding properly. The CfTE tips and updates are separate from the service emails above. If you opt out of them, your account moves into read-only mode. You keep full access to view all your existing surveys and results, but you won't be able to create new ones. A banner on your dashboard explains this and links you straight to your Profile.
Can I re-enable my account after unsubscribing?
Yes, and instantly. Re-enable CfTE communications in your Profile and full access is restored straight away.
Account and privacy
How do I reset my password?
Request a reset and we'll email you a one-time link, valid for one hour.
Can I delete my account or data?
Yes. You can delete any team or survey at any time from your dashboard. Deletion is permanent and removes all the associated response data along with it.
Who can see my team's results?
Only you. Results are visible to the coach of the team and to nobody else, and only once at least three players have responded.
How is my data stored and protected?
Your coach details and the anonymous numeric responses are held on UK and EU-compliant cloud hosting. Respondent data is limited to the fifteen scores and a timestamp, with nothing recorded that could identify an individual player.
